Accidents and Fatalities
Just after 1 o'clock yesterday Mr Edward Harrington, a stevedore, engaged in discharging the steamer Mataura at Lyttelton, went aloft to fix on the derrick head a guy, which had carried away. By some means he lost his footing and fell to the deck and died a few minutes after being picked up. The deceased was very popular with his mates, amongst whom he was known as a genial, kind hearted man, always willing to do a kind or obliging act. He was a member of the Fire Brigade, and was generally respected. Quite a gloom was cast over the place by his untimely death, and on the fatality becoming known the flags at the Port were lowered to half-mast. He leaves a widow and family of six children, the eldest thirteen years of age, to mourn their loss.
