The Evening Post 28th December 1909
FIFTY YEARS ON THE SEA.
DEATH OF CAPTAIN R. G. BUTT.
Fifty-five years has Captain Richard Grombridge (sic) Butt, late coastal pilot, who died yesterday, spent in New Zealand — that is to say, he spent the greater part outside these islands — on the surrounding seas. About six years ago Captain Butt left, and unwillingly, the sea for good, after a long career. Born in the Isle of Wight, nearly 79 years ago, Captain Butt came out to New Zealand as a young man. His first port was Lyttelton, where he arrived in the schooner Lucy Ann from Brisbane. There he settled, trading from Okains Bay to the southern port. He removed to Wellington, where he found congenial work at sea on a ballast boat which ran to and from Ward Island, obtaining ballast for various vessels. Later he became a partner in the Napier, trading up the West Coast. The deceased sailor's connection with the quaint paddle-steamer Lyttelton lasted for a considerable period. It is related of him that one time it took this Craft six weeks to reach Foxton. On that journey, while the boat lay in Porirua Harbour, her anchor went adrift, and Captain Butt was forced to travel overland to Wellington for one to replace it. So there can be no reflection upon either the boat's capacities or those of the skipper. In this old "hooker" Captain Butt conducted salvage operations lasting six months at the wreck of the Lastingham; and as mate of first the Mohaka and later of the Kahu he saw much exciting sea service.
In his position as coastal pilot Captain Butt did good work up and down the coast, going as far north as Auckland and right down south to show the visiting American barques, clippers, and such-like strangers the way along the coasts to port. He sailed the yacht Zarifa to Lyttelton for her championship regatta race there, and was on that craft when she sank in Wellington Harbour. One of the roughest passages (it is related) the deceased ever experienced was while sailing the Rona down from Auckland. He got into bad weather on the coast, and ran under bare poles from Napier to Gisborne, The yachts Waitangi and Ngaire both came down to the Wellington regatta in his charge. While bringing the Ironga to Wellington from the North, Captain Butt had another rough experience of three weeks' duration. On this occasion he lost his compasses.
Captain Butt was a familiar figure to all seafaring men in the North and South Islands. His knowledge of the "ways of the great waters" about New Zealand was a very extensive one, and his experiences very varied. He leaves a widow, who is 76 years of age, and a family of six — five sons and one daughter. Three years ago Captain and Mrs. Butt celebrated their golden wedding, on which day also Mrs. Butt's sister, who, too, is now a widow, celebrated her fifty years of married life.
