We regret to announce the death of Mrs Emma Eliza Payton which took place at her residence, Herbert Street, last evening in her 68th year. Mrs Payton was a native of London, and left England with her husband in the Charlotte Jane, one of the first four ships to the Canterbury Settlement, arriving in Lyttelton in December 1850. She remained there about two years, and then came onto Wellington. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, a son and eight grandchildren. The daughters are married - one to Mr Fisk, well known here, and the other to Mr Leslie, employed in the Telegraph Store. Mrs Payton was a generous and kind-hearted woman, and her death will be regretted by many beside her immediate family
