Obituary
Arthur W. Riddiford
One of the oldest and most respected citizens of Blackball, in the person of Arthur William Riddiford, passed peacefully away at his residence yesterday after a long and painful illness, in his 77th year. Deceased was a native of Fenny, Stratford, Buckinghamshire, England, and landed in Wellington by the ship Douglas in 1872 (Arrived in Wellington on the Douglas in Oct 1874). He came to Hokitika and was appointed verger of All Saint's Church, which position he occupied for some years. After that he went to Blackball, where he carried on business as a stationer and agent for the Greymouth Evening Star. He was a gilder by trade. He was a fine stamp of a man, his word being his bond. He leaves a wife and grown up family of one daughter (Mrs J. Sharpe, Blackball) and three sons - Arthur James (Blackball), Ernest (Ngahere) and Charles (Gisborne) and ten grand children and six great grand children. The greatest of sympathy is expressed for the family and the relatives in their bereavement. His remains will be buried in the Blackball Cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
