DISTRESSING FATALITY.
Man Killed In Station Yard
A sad fatality occurred at 1.40 p.m. today in the Wanganui station yard, when Alexander Mackay, a casual hand employed with the platelaying gang, was knocked down by a shunting engine, death resulting instantaneously. Driver Gichard, under the directions of Shunter Thompson, was carrying out some shunting just beyond the goods shed. He had three tracks on in front of the engine and two behind, and after propelling the first three on to a siding, came on the other line. Deceased, who was engaged weeding at the time, must have noticed the three trucks, on the siding, and could not have anticipated the engine coming on, the result being that he was knocked down and killed instantaneously. It is said that the driver noticed Mackay a moment or two before the fatality, and blew his whistle.
The corpse was frightfully mutilated, one arm being severed and practically every bone in the body being broken. Mackay, who was 45 years of age, was a married man, his residence being at Aramoho. He leaves a widow and three children.
An inquest will be held in the Courthouse to-morrow.
