     Was Bestman at William George Gichard and Melanie Louisa Benson's wedding in 1905

Joseph was an Engineer at Murray's Foundry in Wanganui and he went to sea and became a Marine Engineer. He later qualified as a chief on the ship and it is believed he went ashore at an American port and found out that the chief's exams were being held. He sat it and passed with honours and obtained the highest marks ever recorded. He left the sea to marry Olive and they moved to Hastings where he was an Engineer for Fruit Cool Store Division, then the chief Engineer for Tomoana Freezing Works. He later returned to Wellington and was appointed president of the New Zealand Institute of Refridgeration Engineers in 1954. Details from J Whitford

Drawing of the Sixtieth Appropriation.
There was only a small attendance of the members of the above Society at Willis's Hall last evening to conduct the drawing of an appropriation by ballot of £300. Mr Hall, chairman of directors, presided. Messrs J. L. Gichard and A. McKenzie, were appointed scrutineers, and Miss Eileen McKenzie kindly drew the ballot, the successful marble being 839. The owner having more than one share, was declared entitled to £3OO free of interest.
