The fortnightly sitting of Hutt Resident Magistrate's Court was held yesterday before Messrs. E. Jackson and D. B. Howden, Justices, when the case of A. J. S. Buck, Taita, v. A. S. and S. S. Pike, of the same place, was dealt with. The plaintiff claimed £5, being damages for trespass on land owned by him. In the course of the hearing, Mr. Wilford, for the defence, contended that as the case involved a question of title, the Justices had no jurisdiction, the plaintiff's remedy being an action in the higher Court, and therefore the Justices could take no evidence or proof as to the title disputed. The case was dismissed.

The head teacher, Mr. Johnston, entertained the children to a tea at 5 p.m., to which ample justice was done. After games, &c., they proceeded homeward, evidently delighted with their evening's outing. An entertainment was also given by the same gentleman in the evening; to the heads of families and young people in the district. After having spent a very pleasant evening the company broke up at 12.30 a.m. At the examination of the school on the 16th October, out of 60 presented 53 passed, which may be considered very satisfactory.

The death took place yesterday from complications arising out of the prevailing epidemic of Ernest Seldon Pyke, Government inspector of machinery, surveyor of ships, etc. Mr Pyke joined the service in 1900 as engineer on board the s.s. Hinemos, and was for a period prior to joining the local inspection of machinery office in October, 1916, chief engineer on board the training vessel Amokura. He was well and favourably known in shipping circles throughout the Dominion, and his many friends will regret his death at the comparatively early age of 46 years.
