When Hannah was a child she lived close by to William Gichard Family, the two families became friendly and the story goes that William invited one of his friends into the Best's house and informed that person "that one day I am going to marry Hannah". Details from J Whitford

Gwenyth Stewart nee Miller (granddaughter) remembers Hannah telling her that she traded pilfered tobacco with Maoris that came down the Wanganui River for fruit and vegetables

William wouldn't chop wood on Sundays but Hannah had to cook a 3 course dinner. The women of the household also had the task of cleaning William shoes
