Richard Thorpe was charged with having been absent from his vehicle. Defendant is employed to drive a car on the tramway used by Messrs Findlay and Howarth. While bringing down some logs a few day since he got off the truck to steady it at a sharp turn, when a little child, who was passing close by, had one of it fingers crushed by the wheel of the truck passing over it. His Worship did not consider that the case was one of those contemplated by the ordinance, and dismissed the information.

A painful accident happened yesterday afternoon to a boy, the son of Mr Thorpe, expressman. He was driving an express down Gibson's Quay when he fell, presumably in a fainting fit, from the vehicle, and sustained a bad fracture of the forearm. He was at once picked up by Mr Walker and taken to the hospital where he was immediately attended to by Dr Collins

The West Coast Times 15th February 1892 shows
Mr R Thorpe, the well known carrier, died rather suddenly on Saturday evening. He was about as usual on Friday but in the evening about five o'clock, was seized with violent pains. Medical assistance was at once obtained and everything possible done for him without avail and he died 24 hours afterwards. Mr Thorpe was a very old resident of Hokitika and very generally esteemed. His funeral takes place tomorrow
