The following petition is to be presented next session. This is the correct thing to do, for only by persistency will the attention of Parliament be drawn to claims:-
To the Honourable Gentlemen, Members of the House of Representatives of New Zealand.
    We, the undersigned old soldiers of Her Majesty's Imperial Forces, residing in New Zealand, request that the Hon. Members of the House of Representatives will grant us our sixty acres of land, according to the law under which we were discharged. That we ask no favour, but merely our own, according to the letter of the law. Asking the Hon. Members now assembled to accede to our request, and your petitioners will ever pray.

     Some details from A Dunn

Hans and Maren Sorenson and 1 child arrived on the "Humboldt". It sailed from Hamburg, 10/10/1874 and arrived in Wellington 28/1/1875.

Hans was admitted to the New Plymouth Asylum on 9 Oct 1875 where he stayed until he was transferred to Nelson Braemer Lunatic Asylum, he was admitted there on the 23 Aug 1879. He remained there until he died on the 9 Aug 1913. He was there for 38 years. According to the Braemer records he was a short stooped man with downcast eyes and occasionally attacked the nurses but never spoke. Most probably didn't know English. He is buried in Nelson's Wakapuaka Cemetery. His death certificate has family, issue ages etc unknown, details from A Dunn
