It is with regret we have to announce the death of another of Wanganui's oldest residents, in the person of Mrs. Ann Kelly, who passed away at the residence of her daughter (Mrs. George Greener) yesterday at the ripe old age of 86 years. The deceased arrived at Auckland in the barquentine Spirit of Trade in 1858. In the following year she came to Wanganui, where she resided till the time of her death. From 1880 to 1883 the deceased was in charge of the Wanganui Public Hospital, since which time she has lived with her daughter. Deceased leaves a family of three daughters - Mrs Geo. Greener (Wanganui), Mrs. J. Turner (Wellington) and Mrs. J. Short (this should be Shout not Short as shown in the paper) (Trentham) - and one son, Mr. Charles Kelly, of Lyttelton. There are also 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. To the bereaved relatives we extend our sympathy.

The Wanganui Chronicle 14th December 1874 shows
Fatal Accident By Drowning
About 12 o'clock on Saturday morning, while some boys were playing on the river bank a little above the old breakwater, one little fellow, about 6 or 7 years old, named John McMahon, slipped off the bank into the water - which runs at this place with considerable swiftness. The poor little fellow struggled hard, but being out his depth, and he not being able to swim, his struggles were in vain. A boy named William Kelly, who was standing by, unhesitatingly plunged into the river after him, but as soon as he reached McMahon, the latter clutched at him in such a manner as to prevent him swimming ashore again, and so both sank. Shortly afterwards McMahon's body rose to the surface, and was recovered by Mr Dixon, of the firm of Bowern and Dixon, who stripped and swarm in after it. The body was immediately conveyed to the Hospital, but of course life was extinct. The body of Kelly was dredged for in the afternoon, but without success. As the tide was running out strong at the time the accident occurred, his body in all probability was carried down river for a considerable distance; but it is to be hoped that it may soon be recovered. We sincerely sympathise with the parents and friends of both of the boys in their untimely and sudden bereavement, and we cannot refrain from paying a tribute to the memory of the brave boy Kelly, who so nobly risked and lost his own life in saving that of his comrade. Kelly was only some eight or nine years of age. An inquest was held on Saturday afternoon, before C. H. Borlase, Esq., coroner, on the body of the boy John McMahon.

The Wanganui Chronicle 15th December 1874 shows
Inquest - At the inquest which was held on Saturday afternoon on the body of the boy McMahon, nothing further was elicited than has already appeared in our columns. A verdict of "accidental death" was returned, and the jury expressed their appreciation of the noble conduct of Mr Dixon in so promptly endeavouring to succour the drowning lad, assistance which unfortunately came just too late

The Recent Case Of Drowning
Early on Sunday morning Mr Kelly, the father of the lad who so bravely risked and lost his life in the endeavour to rescue young McMahon, started to drag the river for the body of his son. Several friends and neighbours, who felt much sympathy for him in his sudden and painful bereavement, accompanied him, and they carefully searched the river as far as the mouth, but without any success.
