Mr George Greener, Member of Well-known City Family, Dies
A member of a well-known Wanganui family, Mr George Greener, died this week. He was born here 67 years ago and attended the Marist Brothers' School. Later he was employed by the late Mr T. Sparks, painter and paperhanger, and Mailman Bros. Although his health was impaired by gassing in World War I, he took a keen interest in community affairs and in sport. For a period of 25 years he was in and out of hospital, with one major operation resulting in the loss of a leg. However he met his adversity with courage and during the winter months was a regular patron at Spriggens Park. A keen and enthusiastic bird fancier, he was a member of the Wanganui Cage Bird Club and exhibited with success in all parts of the North Island. Mr Greener is survived by his wife, one son Kevin, in the Royal New Zealand Navy, and one daughter, Mrs C Pocock, Paraparaumu. There are three sons by a previous marriage Bert, Eric and Leo. The funeral, which took place at the old Catholic cemetery, Heads Road, yesterday, was largely attended. The Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father John O'Connor, SM, in St. Mary's Church. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Father J. Cullem, SM. The RSA service was conducted by Mr J O'Reilly
