Drowned on Mara's Ford
A drowning occurred at Mara's Ford over the lower Opihi yesterday morning, by which a well-known and much respected residence of Temuka, Mr H. Oldfield, met his death. Mr Oldfield, who had been in indifferent health for some time, had left home for his farm on the Seadown well wrapped up, and driving in a light dogcart. About 9 a.m. his body was discovered in the Opihi, tangled up in the reins. The horse he had been driving was also drowned. Deep sympathy is felt in Temuka for the wife and family of the deceased.
An inquest was held at the Temuka Courthouse at 2.15 p.m., before Mr C. A. Wray, coroner, and a jury of six, Mr C. Brewer, being foreman. David Ennis, labourer at the Opihi, stated that he saw the trap standing in the middle of the river at 9 a.m. The horse was lying down between the shafts with its head just above water, and Mr Oldfield's body was floating in front of the horse in about three feet of water. Witness sent word to the police, and a Maori drove his trap in and pulled the body out. The trap was found about 20 chains below the lower ford at Mara's. Witness thought the horse, which did not like the water, had become unmanageable.
Thomas Washington gave corroborative evidence, and stated that the ford was dangerous, as the river was raising and the channel had altered through scouring.
The jury returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally drowned while crossing the Opihi river during a fresh.
