The Hawkes Bay Herald-Tribune 14th July 1948 shows
Elderly Man Found Dead in Napier
An elderly man, Joshua Wilson Gray, aged 71, widower, was found dead in his bach at 42 Battery Road, Port Ahuriri, yesterday morning, presumably from the effects of gas from an unlighted stove burner. A veteran of World War I, Mr Gray was known in Napier as an art-union ticket seller.
Mr. Gray, a bronchial sufferer, was last seen alive the previous evening by a friend, who called to put a plaster on his chest. The radio was playing, and one of the burners on the gas stove is stated to have been burning under some utensil. The friend departed, leaving Mr. Gray in his bed.
Another friend called at the bach early yesterday morning to see if Mr. Gray was all right. Hearing the radio playing, he decided not to disturb the old man, but returned about an hour later, he found Mr. Gray dead in bed.
The opinion was advanced that there had been a slacking in gas pressure which had caused the flame on the burner to go out.
Mr. Gray had no family and lived alone.
An inquest was opened yesterday before the District Coroner, Mr. J. W. Snaddon, and adjourned after evidence of identification had been given.
