Railway Fatality
Young Woman Killed
(By Telegraph - Press Association.)
Palmerston, 9th April
A shocking fatality occurred on the railway north of Otaki on Saturday, the victim being Miss Ellen Louise? Oates, who was travelling by the Main Trunk express. The body was brought to Palmerston last night by deceased's brother, a well known local cycle and photograph agent. Miss Oates, who was aged 26, had been staying with another brother at Wellington. She was not in good health, and was on her way to her brother at Palmerston with her mother. When the train was about two miles north of Otaki she went out on to the carriage platform, and it seems, fell between the two carriages. It was some time before the guard could be informed, and by that time the train was far past the scene, but it was stopped at Manakau, whence some railway men were sent back with a trolley. They found the body terribly mangled, and took it back to Otaki. Death must have been instantaneous. An inquest will be opened tomorrow morning to take Mrs. Oates's evidence, and to permit of? the body being taken to Christchurch, where deceased's home was, for interment.
The late Miss Oates was a sister of Mr. T. H. Oates, cycle dealer, of Upper Willis street

Young Woman's Death
The Inquest
(By Telegraph - Special to the Post.)
Palmerston N., This Day.
The inquest touching the death of Ellen Louisa Oates, who fell from the Main Trunk express on Saturday, was held here yesterday.
The evidence showed that deceased had not been in good health for two or three years, and had suffered from a nervous breakdown. On leaving Wellington by train she seemed melancholy and depressed, and had been so for some time. When she went on the platform she had just spoken of refreshments. She had often complained of dizziness.
After hearing the evidence at length the Coroner said there was a possibility of deceased having been seized with a sudden fit of faintness and fallen between the rails. He found that deceased met her death from injuries received from falling from a train, there being nothing to show how the accident occurred
