Two Inquests
Mr. F. V. Fraser, held inquests this morning on two men whose deaths were indirectly due to influenza
...
The other inquiry was as to the death of Thomas Edward John Tolley, a storeman employed by Messrs. J. Chambers and Son, a married man, aged 42 years, with a wife and nine children, who, while delirious through influenza, jumped into the harbour at Evans Bay and was drowned. The evidence showed that deceased did not struggle when he was in the water, from which it was assumed that death was due to shock rather than drowning. Mr. J. J. McGrath, officer-in-charge of the Oriental Bay - Roseneath district, said the family had been supplied with all necessaries since deceased contracted influenza. He gave particulars of the efforts he and Constable Hall had made to intercept the deceased from the time it was reported to him that the deceased had left his house, saying he was going to drown himself, and the time his body was found floating. Only a few minutes had elapsed, and no other effort could have been made. Tolley was a poor man, and all through his illness had been very much worried as to how he was going to meet his liabilities. The family was now being looked after by voluntary helpers. The finding of the Coroner was that death was due to shock caused by having thrown himself into the water while depressed through influenza. He added he was glad that Mr. McGrath had volunteered to give evidence in the case. He knew that sometimes people complained that proper assistance was not given in necessitous cases. Sometimes it might happen that a committee was not fully informed, or some oversight might occur, but he believed that this committee, like the other influenza committees about the city, had been doing excellent work, and that in this particular case everything that could be done for the family appeared to have been done. When he received the message that the man had left the house, Mr. McGrath acted with commendable promptitude, and it was only by a margin of minutes that the deceased's life was not saved. They all owed a great debt of gratitude to the voluntary workers and those committees which had done so much to relieve suffering, not only from illness, but to assist people who would otherwise be worried about their financial responsibilities.
