The ferry was taken over by Brown and Le Cren and then by William Dale who was appointed ferryman in 1856. After a short time he bought the ferry from the owners and carried it on until the Heathcote Bridge was completed in 1864. He employed two men, who lived in Ferrymead House, to run the ferry for him.
-
As with the former site, the ferry again consisted of a punt pulled across by ropes on a travelling block. The ferry was the `quickest' door to Christchurch as there was neither tunnel or bridge and it accommodated both vehicles and foot passengers. Travellers over the Bridle Path were met at Birdsey's Hotel by two Irish jaunting carts owned by Mr Dale, the fare being 1 shilling per head. To cross by the ferry a charge of one shilling was made for vehicles and three pence for each passenger aboard. Two vehicles could be taken across on the punt on one trip as well as about thirty people.
-
A return for 14 to 22 November 1862, show the traffic which crossed the river by ferry in that period, were 268 carts, 295 passenger conveyances, 312 saddle horses and 816 other passengers. These figures suggest an annual traffic of more than 10,000 carts, 12,000 saddle horses and 30,000 persons.
-
After a stint away Dale returned to live at Ferrymead until his death in 1889. His house, called Riverslea, stood alongside Townsend's original Ferrymead House on land now part of Ferrymead Reserve. It was a two storied reconstruction of Ferrymead House, although it considerably outshone Townsend's house architecturally. After Dales death it served as a farmhouse but gradually deteriorated to the point that it had to be demolished in the late 1920's.

Cohen - On the 25th June, at Naseby, Lewis A., only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Cohen, of Willis street, aged 27 years
-
We regret to announce the death of Mr. Lewis Cohen, only son of Mr. Falk (sic) Cohen, of Willis street. The deceased was born in Wellington 27 years ago, and was for some time in the employ of Messrs. P. Hayman and Co. as commercial traveller. A few years ago evidence of chest trouble appeared, and he was sent to Naseby, Otago, to recuperate. His health improved during his sojourn there, but recently the disease reappeared and he returned to Naseby. His condition became so critical last week that his mother went down to see him, and she was with him till the end. The deceased was a bright young man, full of promise, and his parents will have general sympathy in their bereavement. The body is to be brought to Wellington for interment. The funeral will be attended by the Antipodean Lodge of Oddfellows, with which the deceased has been connected since boyhood
