The Southland Times 23rd March 1889 shows
Lamentable - Many householders in town and town will learn with regret that Mr Harvey Allan, for may years storeman with Messrs Stock and Co., and latterly with Messrs Whittingham Bros. and Instone, died yesterday after a brief illness. What makes the death of Mr Allan the more lamentable is the fact that his wife, an estimable woman, died some four years ago, so that a young family are now doubly orphaned. Mr Allan was a singularly quiet unobtrusive man, but the customers of his employers soon learned that he was as singularly conscientious and attentive to their desires and respected him accordingly. The deceased was seized with internal inflammation on Saturday, but apparently the gravity of his state was not apprehended till to late for medical skill to save his life
