Obituary
Mr Frank Crum
The death occurred suddenly at his residence on the corner of Peter and Victoria Streets, Ashburton, early this morning, of a well-known Ashburton resident and businessman, Mr Frank Crum. He was in his 74th year. Mr Crum was born in Ashburton and had spent his whole life here.
Mr Crum was perhaps best known for his connection with the bricklaying and contracting firm of Crum Bros., Ltd., of which he was a foundation member. The business was originally started by his father, but later Mr Crum and his two brother, Albert and Oliver, went into partnership to form what is now one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the district. The firm has been connected with the construction of many business and private dwellings in Ashburton and has also undertaken numerous large construction jobs.
Apart from his business activities, Mr Crum was closely associated with the community life and development of Ashburton. For many years he took a keen interest in the work of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society and was a former member of the society's council. He was also an ardent Rugby enthusiast, and some years ago, he accompanied, as a supporter, an All Black team on a tour of Australia.
The Advance Ashburton Association was another of Mr Crum's interests, and he was always a prominent figure at many of that organisation's functions and galas. He was also associated with the boxing and wrestling fraternity in this district and was connected with the Hakatere Sports Club, of which he is believed to have been one of the last original members. He was an old member of the Ashburton Forsters' Lodge, having joined that body in 1900.
Mr Crum is survived by his wife and one son Ralph (Ashburton), a daughter, Mrs E. W. Millichamp (Tinwald), and four sisters, Mesdames A. C. Hardy and L. Bushell (Ashburton) and Patterson and Elerig (Christchurch)
