A letter was received from Mr. Beckett, Melrose, stating that a dead cow, belonging to C. (sic) Scaramelli, had been lying near his place for several days, and was getting very offensive. Mr. Scaramelli knew the cow was there but had neglected to bury it. The Inspector of Nuisances was instructed to write to Mr. Scaramelli informing him that unless the cow was removed at once proceedings would be taken against him under the Public Health Act.

The Evening Post 24th March 1887 shows
Mrs. J. Beckett, of Melrose, writes to us complaining strongly of pilferers visiting her garden and stealing pumpkins therefrom. One of the visitors, after plucking the pumpkin, left it at a short distance, and Mrs. Beckett promises him a warm reception, as well as the pumpkin, if he will return for it. She also suggests that a certain young man from Taranaki-street should call and pay for the pumpkin he walked off with.

Mrs. Beckett, of Melrose, Island Bay, writes stating that she caught a large lamprey in the Island Bay stream some four years ago, and sent it to the Colonial Museum. Another specimen was captured this year in the same stream.

Waldie and others be informed that the City Engineer will proceed with, the work at Garfield, Adams, Jackson, and Lincoln streets, Brooklyn, as set out in the Melrose schedule as soon as-possible.
